\u2022 Alliyah – (plural, Alliyot) \u2013 Literally means \u201cgoing up\u201d to the Bimah to say the blessings over the Torah Scroll.
\u2022 Bimah – The raised platform or pulpit in most Synagogues where the service is conducted.
\u2022 Chatan – Hebrew word for groom.
\u2022 Chuppah – Wedding canopy that signifies a home or shelter; literally means “that which covers or floats” in Hebrew.
\u2022 D\u2019var Torah – An explanation of the weekly Torah portion, or parsha.
\u2022 Haftarah – Readings from the biblical books of the Prophets.
\u2022 Havdalah – Literally means separation or distinction. The ceremony that ends the Shabbat.
\u2022 Horah – Traditional circle dance. The bride and groom, the Bar\/Bat Mitzvah and their families are lifted up on a chair during the dancing.
\u2022 Kallah – Hebrew for bride.
\u2022 Kashrut – The Jewish dietary laws. If prepared accordingly, food is certified Kosher.
\u2022 Kiddushin – The betrothal ceremony – the first part of the wedding ceremony.
\u2022 Kippah – Hebrew for skull cap, (plural, kippot) worn as a sign of respect for G_d. Yarmulke is the Yiddish word.
\u2022 Klezmer – Traditional Yiddish celebratory music.
\u2022 Mazel Tov! – Congratulations!
\u2022 Mikvah – Ritual bath for brides, and grooms too.
\u2022 Mitzvah – An obligation of Jewish life.
\u2022 Motzi – Blessing over the bread recited before meals.
\u2022 Nisuin – Nuptial ceremony – the second part of the wedding ceremony.
\u2022 Parsha – The Torah portion of the week. Also sometimes referred to as the sedra.
\u2022 Simcha – A joyous event. Often used to refer to a Bar\/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, or other celebrations.
\u2022 Tallit – A prayer shawl.
\u2022 Tefillin – Two black leather boxes, fastened to leather straps, containing portions from the Torah; also called phylacteries.
\u2022 Sephardic – Jews of Spanish, Portuguese and North African descent.
\u2022 Shabbat – Jewish Sabbath, beginning Friday at sundown and ending Saturday at dusk.
\u2022 Sheva B\u2019rachot – Seven marriage blessings recited under the chuppah.
\u2022 Sofer – A Hebrew scribe.
\u2022 Torah – The word Torah means \u201cteachings.\u201d Torah is also referred to as the first five books of the Bible or the five books of Moses. Sometimes Torah means the whole Bible and everything Jews believe in.
\u2022 Tzedakah – Charity. The mitzvah of sacred giving.
\u2022 Ufruf – A ceremony honoring the groom (and in some cases the bride) by calling them to the Torah on the Shabbat (before their wedding.)
\u2022 Yad – The pointer shaped at the end like a hand, which the reader of the Torah uses to keep his\/her place.
\u2022 Yichud – Brief seclusion (10-15 minutes) of bride and groom immediately after the wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n
