literally means &#8220;that which covers or floats&#8221; in Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D&#8217;var Torah:<\/strong> An explanation of the weekly Torah portion, or parsha.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Haftarah:<\/strong> Readings from the biblical books of the Prophets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Havdalah:<\/strong> Literally means separation or distinction. The ceremony that ends the Shabbat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honor:<\/strong> Usually refers to a non-speaking participation in the service, such as opening the ark or holding the Torah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horah:<\/strong> Traditional circle dance. The bride and groom, or the Bar\/Bat Mitzvah is lifted up on a chair, accompanied by Hava Negilah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kallah:<\/strong> Hebrew for bride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kashrut:<\/strong> The Jewish dietary laws. If prepared accordingly, food is certified Kosher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kiddushin:<\/strong> The betrothal ceremony &#8211; the first part of the wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kippah:<\/strong> Hebrew for skull cap, (plural, kippot) worn as a sign of respect for G_d. Yarmulke is the Yiddish word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Klezmer:<\/strong> Traditional Yiddish celebratory music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mazel Tov!:<\/strong> Congratulations!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mikvah:<\/strong> Ritual bath for brides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mitzvah:<\/strong> (plural, Mitzvot) An obligation of Jewish life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motzi:<\/strong> Blessing over the bread recited before meals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nisuin:<\/strong> Nuptial ceremony &#8211; the second part of the weding ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parsha:<\/strong> The Torah portion of the week. Also sometimes referred to as the sedra.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sh&#8217;ma:<\/strong> A central prayer of the worship service. A statement of faith which is derived from the Torah: Hear O Israel, the Lord is our G_d, the Lord is One.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simcha:<\/strong> A joyous event. Often used to refer to a Bar\/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, or other celebrations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tallit:<\/strong> A prayer shawl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tefillin:<\/strong> Two black leather boxes, fastened to leather straps, containing portions from the Torah; also called phylacteries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sephardic:<\/strong> Jews of Spanish, Portuguese and North African descent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shabbat:<\/strong> Jewish Sabbath, beginning Friday at sundown and ending Saturday at sundown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sheva B&#8217;rachot:<\/strong> Seven marriage blessings recited under the chuppah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sofer:<\/strong> A Hebrew scribe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tish:<\/strong> Yiddish for table, the light-hearted discussion held before the wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Torah:<\/strong> The word Torah means &#8220;teachings&#8221;. Torah is also referred to as the first five books of the Bible or the five books of Moses. Sometimes Torah means the whole Bible and everything Jews believe in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tzedakah:<\/strong> Charity.
